The Safety Of A Baby Hammock

As good parents we want to do everything humanly possible to provide for our children. Part of that care and concern is providing opportunities to ensure they reach their fullest capacity in all aspects of their being. Those aspects include the physical, mental and spiritual components of those children.

Also, when the baby is first brought home, parents want to ensure that safety measures are in place. Those safety measures include the providing of proper nutrition and being certain that the home is baby proof.

An important part of baby proofing the home is to make sure that the bed the infant sleeps on is conducive to the safety of the child. One of those types of safety beds is a baby hammock. What is a baby hammock and what are some of the health and safety benefits are important features to examine.

What Is A Baby Hammock?

A baby hammock is similar to a regular hammock, but is designed to hold an infant. These hammocks are generally made of a soft and durable fabric that overlays a solid frame. This frame is also suspended from a firm support and held to that support by a heavy-duty coil. This heavy-duty coil allows for the baby hammock to gently sway through the touch of a family member or by the gentle moving of the surrounding air.

There are many designs and accessories that can be added or purchased to individualize the baby hammock in meeting the personalized needs of the family. Some of those accessories can include netting, pillows and the baby hammock being available in assorted colors and patterns.

Health And Safety Benefits

There are many health and safety benefits associated with the use of a baby hammock. These benefits are realized in that the baby hammock allows the infant to sleep on a bed situated at an upward angle.

This sleeping angle is especially beneficial to prevent acid reflux from occurring. Acid reflux is the moving of stomach acid from the stomach upwards through the esophagus. Acid reflux, formula or milk mixed with stomach acid, can cause severe heartburn.

This severe heartburn will disturb the infant’s sleep and cause the child to spit up their food more than necessary. The use of a baby hammock will keep the baby slightly elevated at a modest angle which will minimize acid reflux. This increased level of the baby’s upper torso will allow gravity to keep any reflux action in check.

Another benefit of utilizing a baby hammock is for the newborn that is experiencing the symptoms of colic. Colic is a condition caused by spasms within the intestine. It has been documented that motion will soothe the symptoms of a baby experiencing a colicky episode. By placing an infant in a baby hammock, the motion that this bed provides will provide that needed motion.
